More than just cheap plastic cameras

A cheap plastic camera doesn’t have to be naked and ugly! Here are some of my works on various ‘toy’ cameras …

Stardust La Sardina : The most girly design I’ve done … a La Sardina for a friend.

Summer Holga : A last minute design for a friend …

Diana’s Butts : A fun design (with a crappy name) Diana+ made specially for ThirtySix’s 1st anniversary.

Woodpecker, Fly : A ‘wooden’ version of the famous Blackbird, Fly camera … made specially for those guys in Superheadz. Camera sponsored by 8storeytree.

Pop Diana+ : A slightly different approach compared to the ‘Woodpecker, Fly’ and Holga cameras I worked on. This time, I decided on a rather ‘raw’ & ‘pop’ look for the design.

Playground Holga : A crazy idea which turned out to be one of my personal favourite.

Woody Holga : My first ever attempt at dressing up a camera. Sold it off in a charity sale.

Postage-free Holga : A stamp covered Holga with a coat of clear paint. It was pretty challenging working with those old stamps as they were very fragile.

*** Here are some other images of dressed up Holga cameras sent to me by readers ***

  1. Awesome designs!!!!!

  2. These are really cool stuff. Cant wait to get my hands on one then I can start customizing too :D

  3. nice! love ur woody. :D

  4. LV HOLGA!!! hahahaa!!!

  5. Wow, you did such a good job on beautifying those cameras!
I hope I’m not causing too much trouble by asking how you did it. Did you glue the stamps on directly? Is it just paper that the first camera has been wrapped in?

Am so awfully envious of your collection. You’re so blessed! (:

  6. Kim, thank you. The Woody Holga was made using some adhesive sheets I found in a DIY store. These material are meant for furnitures etc, thus they are pretty durable. If you were to use paper, I’m sure you’ll need a layer of clear paint to protect it, else it’s gonna be messy.

As for the version with stamps, yes I glued the stamps directly on the Holga. I carefully applied few layers of clear paint to protect it once it was done.

It ain’t that hard, really. All you need is lots of patience and some careful planning … else the Holga’s gonna be in a mess. LOL!

Stay tuned for my most challenging design ever …. it’s 70% done now and I’ll post photos of it in a week or two.

  7. Oh, I will indeed stay! Thanks much for the reply; will embark operation on my Holga as soon as possible!

  26. Diana,

Thanks. Hey you are having the same name as my favourite camera! LOL! :D

I have not been customizing Holgas for a while because I’m dedicating most of my time to my little boy. I’m working on a Holga 135BC though. It’s been quite a while but I’m trying to finish it in a month’s time.

  27. OH MY GOSH HOW DID YOU DO THAT! how did you do the wood one? what did you use?
did you cut out like exactly the measurement?

  28. oh yeah im singaporean where can i buy holgas? jhaha how much was urs?

  29. li en, I get my Holgas from 8storeytree (http://8storeytree.com/store)

I used some self-adhesive material from the DIY stores for the wooden one. I did not cut exactly but used several small pieces to make it.

  32. @kira-kira : Thanks. I’d love to do customizations but I seriously need to find more time in life to do those. Haha.

  35. BBF damn nice..

  36. Was the lego one difficult to do? Where did you get your lego pieces from? How long did it take you?

  37. OH and the stamps one. how many stamps did you need? and you used superglue to stick them down right?

  38. @Su-Lyn : The Lego one was the toughest to do. I bought some 1×1 lego blocks from a shop in Novena Square (now closed) and took me about half a month (on and off) to arrange and stick them. As for the stamp one … I don’t know how many was there. Haha. I had many stamps, so that wasn’t a problem for me. I used those UHU glue instead of superglue for the stamp one. It’s only after completion, a few layers of clear paint was applied.

  51. @Jenni : Thank you

  52. Hi i love the lego one. Any idea where i can get that? If any one do please email to this email felchia.jx@gmail.com thanks(:

  53. @Fel : I made that one and it was sold in a charity sale some time ago. Sorry I’ve no idea if anyone else has made a similar one or has the buyer put it up for sale later on. :)

  54. Will it be possible if you make another one?

  55. @Fel : So sorry to disappoint you but I won’t be able to make another one. Firstly … it was supposed to be a ‘one piece only’ when I sold it and secondly … I don’t really like doing the same thing again. Hope you understand. I’ve been saying this but maybe I can *cough* repeat it again … I’m trying to find time to work on some new designs/ideas but … *cough* free time is something that is hardly in my vocabulary anymore. :D

  56. These are amazing! I already covered one of mine in feathers (click my name for link) but the anti-slip Holga has inspired me to knit a skin for another one (at first-glance I thought exact-colour had crocheted that fetching blue & white skin!)

  57. @6x6pix : Your chicken Holga is cool and very interesting! Hahaha! Now how do you actually bring it out for shoots? Hahaha! Don’t me adding your link here for those who wanna take a look at your cool work. http://www.tasteslikeyellow.com/6×6/chicken

  63. We always reeembmr our first.Plastic camera, that is. Mine was a modified Holga. I ordered it while working on a long-term, out-of-town project in Greenville, Texas. Aimlessly surfing the net one afternoon, I found some images made with a toy plastic camera of a cemetery in New York City. I was mesmerized. A few clicks and a couple of Google searches later, I purchased what would become my precious Holgy. That pile of plastic and a fistful of film were waiting for me when I returned home. I was immediately sent to Pascagoula, Mississippi on a new project, so that is the city where I lost my toy camera virginity. At first, I thought my return to film-based photography was, like Proust’s madeleine, a remembrance of things past. I certainly realized how sterile digital photography was compared to the tactile experience of inserting a roll of 120. I also relished the sweet pain of delayed gratification mailing the film off to a lab in California and waiting and waiting and waiting for the return of my prints. That four years and countless rolls of film ago. Today, I am the steward of a second Holga (one can never have too many), a niew Diana+, an original Diana, a Banner, and an Arrow (thank God for eBay), as well as a Horizon 202 panoramic. I define myself as a toy camera photographer, to which most people respond with Huh? or What’s that? followed by Why? My response usually includes something about obtaining images possible only with the combination of film and low-fi optics and the unpredictable nature of the two.But that changed two months ago. That is when my mother asked me to help her clean out her storage room. One large tub was filled with old family photos. And there, in all that deckle-edged, black and white, Kodak Brownie blurriness, was my toy camera A-ha moment. It was a truly Freudian experience. Sometimes a plastic camera is more than a plastic camera. It is a return to my childhood. Like a long-forgotten dream, I realize how those images informed my memory of my childhood. There I am in all my out-of-focus, snapshot glory, playing with the garden hose, petting my beagle, Pete, standing next to my pet duck, Ducky Doodle, in a shallow wading pool, holding my great-grandmother’s hand, and showing off my new pair of cowboy boots. No wonder I cherish the portrait I took of my youngest son last winter, standing with my old Flexible Flyer sled. Except for the Gap sweatshirt, it could just as easily have been of me 35 years ago. That is why now that I have gone plastic, I can never really go back. And, why I will always reeembmr my first.

  64. @Youssef : That’s awesome!
